The Competitiveness Initiative (CI) started as a pilot venture to support regional governments to increased competitiveness levels in given sectors of their economy. Moreover, from the beginning CI operations emphasized on the interdependence between institutional modernization (territorial governance) and specific sectors of market economy market economy (key competitiveness factors).
